When we don’t feel well, we often blame our physical complaints on a cold, flu or an inevitable consequence of ageing. However, they can also mean something completely different!
Normally, of course, there is no need to panic, but some symptoms simply should not be ignored. They may even indicate a thyroid disorder. The thyroid gland is very small but plays a major role in our body. It is responsible for the functioning of metabolic processes and even influences the growth process. If the thyroid works too fast or too slow, it can cause serious problems. A thyroid disorder can cause many symptoms:
- Sadness or depression: If your thyroid isn’t working properly, your mood can take a huge hit. This means that you may experience insomnia, feel extremely tired, depressed or lethargic.
- Constipation: As your thyroid affects metabolic processes, you may experience constipation, unexplained weight loss or gain, diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, or constant hunger.
- Heart conditions: The thyroid gland affects your heart rhythm and heart rate. Do you have heart problems and nothing seems to help? Well, it could be due to a problem with your thyroid gland.
- edema: A very important symptom of a dysregulated thyroid gland is an abnormal accumulation of fluid. This can lead to a swollen gland, swollen face or bulging eyes.
Do you recognize any of the above symptoms? Then we recommend that you request a thyroid test from your doctor as soon as possible.
